Atq SEIHO Zoological art collection of Bards Colored Woodblock print book Japan. EISHO HYAKUCHO GAFU (lit The Hundred Birds collection of Eisho) Vol. 2, from complete in four volumes. 13.07× 8.97 Large book first edition. 54 pages of picture album, 51 pages of which have fine woodcuts depicting 25 species of birds. With original titleslip and cover. Excellent state of preservation above standard. Tsuchida Eisho, who painted these pictures, was not a painter but a herbologist from the Edo period, and he probably had never considered himself an artist, but there is no doubt that he had advanced artistic skills. As it is clear from the fact that Japanese herbology since the Meiji era was mixed and developed with European natural history, herbology in Japan and natural history were almost synonymous. Therefore, Eisho’s work containning in this book also satisfies the requirements for as natural history illustrations by unusual woodblock printing. Eisho is only known as the person who drew this work and Bicyu-zu (1887, copperplate engraving), the (possibly the world’s first) microscopic observation of thermostable bacterial spores. Takeuchi Seiho, who revisioned Eisho’s work, which can be called almost anonymous, and was in charge of the stubbornrevision and supervision of this book, was one of the founders of Nihonga and was an active painter from the Meiji period through the early Showa period. Without the participation of Seiho, who was described as drawing even the subject’s scent, this level of woodblock printing perfection would not have been achieved. In particular, the gradation expression which is not inferior to the hand coloring is phenomenal. This collection is also a masterpiece zoological art book that can re-recognize Seiho as a great and true artistic figure. Author Writer: Takeuchi Seiho (Supervision) Painter: Tuchida Eisho AKA.
