Bookstore situated in Tokyo, Japan. Feel free to have a look at our store! Comment: “Bungei Kurabu” (The Literary Club) was a major Japanese literary magazine first published in 1895 (Meiji 28) by Hakubunkan, and it became one of the most influential publications of the Meiji and Taisho periods. It featured serialized novels, essays, poetry, and more, providing a platform for prominent writers such as Ozaki Koyo, Izumi Kyoka, and Tokutomi Roka. One of the magazine’s signature features was its frontispiece illustrations (kuchie) -vivid prints bound at the front of each issue. These were created by leading artists of the time, including Yoshu Chikanobu, Ogata Gekko, and Mizuno Toshikata, and were produced using techniques such as color woodblock, lithography, or copperplate printing. The kuchie visually enhanced the literary works, often depicting beautiful women (bijinga), historical scenes, or contemporary life, and served as both artistic embellishments and marketing tools. These frontispieces are now appreciated as key examples of early modern Japanese visual culture, reflecting the intersection of literature, art, and printing technology during Japan’s rapid modernization.
