This image is identifiable as a single sheet from “Yamashiro no kuni Ide no Tamagawa” / “The Ide Jewel River in Yamashiro Province, ” from an untitled triptych series of the Six Jewel Rivers. The design is a wonderful example of Kuniyoshi’s bijin and landscape work, combining a graceful female figure, flowering branches, patterned kimono, flowing blue water, and fine Edo-period textile detail. Kuniyoshi is one of the major ukiyo-e printmakers of the 19th century, best known for warrior prints, actor subjects, beautiful women, landscapes, humor, and highly inventive compositions. Here, the appeal is quieter and more lyrical: the woman’s pose, the blossoms, and the moving water create a refined seasonal scene with strong decorative presence. Antique Japanese Woodblock Print by Chikanobu Parody of the Twelve Zodiac Animals (Sheep) c. Born in 1838 in Niigata Prefecture, Toyohara Chikanobu was the elder of two sons. His father was a samurai, a retainer of the Sakakibara clan. He studied Kano school painting as a child and developed an interest in ukiyo-e in his teens. He studied with Kuniyoshi and then with Kunisada and Kunichika. During the Meiji Restoration, he joined the Tokugawa shogun’s elite samurai brigade, the shogitai, and fought against the emperor’s forces in the Battle of Ueno and the Battle of Hakodate. After the fall of the shogun, he went to Tokyo and started to make a living as a woodblock print artist. The print presented was published in 1893 – 1894 as part of the series “Parody of the Twelve Zodiac Animals”. This series consisted of 12 prints, one for each of the animals of the Chinese zodiac. Adopted by both Japan and Korea, the Chinese zodiac is composed of these animals: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. Each of the prints in this series depicts festivals and temples most closely associated with each of the various animals, with women and children taking part in seasonal activities in the foreground, with a landscape inset above. Even though the print is called “The Sheep, ” you can hardly see the animal – it is seen in the very background behind a fence in the Ueno Zoo. This is a famous Zoo in Tokyo that is still extremely popular. You can see a group of visitors – a woman with a friend (or attendant) and a little girl. The focus is on the group and their ornate and beautiful garments – kimonos and kimono coats. The girl is wearing “hifu” – a kimono overcoat that is not tied by obi. Even nowadays, some people visiting the Ueno Park with its museums and the Zoo often wear traditional Japanese clothing. We can also see that a man in the background is wearing European-style clothes. Chikanobu is famous of bringing the views and details of the everyday life of Japanese people during the Meiji Restoration. Antique Japanese Woodblock Diptych Print by Kunisada -Modern Genji – a Comparison of Murasaki’s Figures in Edo #10 c. Presented is a beautiful Japanese full oban-size woodblock print – diptych- created by the renowned artist of the late Edo period, Utagawa Kunisada (1786 – 1864), also known as Kunisada I and Toyokuni III. This print is a diptych – a two-sheet print. It is titled as Number 4 in the series of eight diptychs created by Utagawa Kunisada in 1852-53 as illustrations to the most famous and cherished in Japan, the early medieval novel: Genji Monogatari or the Tale of Genji. It was written by Murasaki Shikibu, a lady-in-waiting of the Imperial Court in the 11th century. The series is called “A comparison of Murasaki’s figures in Edo”. Edo murasaki sugata kurabe. It means the artist set the 11th-century characters in a late Edo-era environment contemporary with him. The print shows many small, intricate details and gives us a picture of life in mid-1800s Japan. Prince Genji is in a palace, enjoying a view of the mountains outside a window. He wears a blue coat patterned with cherry blossoms and toys over a gray and brown kimono, smiling as he looks over his shoulder. At right, a young beauty kneels in a doorway, grinning as she watches him. An intricate wooden railing with shoji panels above lines the back of the room, with pines framing a view of the low clouds drifting across the valley. Presented is a beautiful Japanese full oban-size woodblock print – diptych- created by the renowned artist of the late Edo period, Utagawa Kunisada (1786 – 1864), also known as Kunisada I and Toyokuni III. This print is a triptych – a three-sheet print called “Revenge of the Soga Brothers” or “Tora Gozen and the Soga Brothers”. This is a scene from the famous tale of the Soga Brothers – “Soga Monogatari”. On the center sheet, the older brother Soga Juro pays a visit to his beloved courtesan, the beautiful Tora gozen. He sits beside an oil lamp, writing a final poem, knowing that tomorrow he may face his death when he and his brother finally avenge their father’s death. The beauty smiles at him gently as she holds a comb, a young attendant placing a basin of water at his feet, unaware that she may never see him again. His younger brother, Soga Goro, waits patiently outside, holding his bow and hat, his horse nearby. A full moon glows softly in the night sky, framed by the delicate white blossoms of a cherry tree. A lovely and poignant image, with beautiful detail in the handsome interior setting. The print was made using the Japanese woodblock technique in 1847 during Kunisada’s lifetime. Up for sale is a wonderful antique late 19th century Ogata Gekko Japanese woodblock print. It’s signed in several sections of the print and depicts a man and lady sitting on a bench surrounded by dense foliage. The print is matted, under glass, and framed. It’s in nice antique condition and measures 19 1/4 inches by 15 1/4 inches framed. The print measures around 13 1/2 inches by 9 1/2 inches. Presented is an attractive and captivating Japanese full oban-size original woodblock triptych print created by the renowned artist of the Meiji (and later) periods, Utagawa Kokunimasa (1874 – 1944). The print is titled “Victory of Japanese Troops Pursuing Chinese Troops at Asan in Korea” (Chôsen Gazan ni Nihon hei Shina hei o tsuigekisen shôri no zu). The title is self-explanatory. The outbreak of the first Sino-Japanese War in 1894 triggered an explosion of demand for war prints. Artists, including Kokunimasa, rushed to meet the public appetite for visual news from the battlefield. These works were often produced under tight deadlines and circulated widely. Kokunimasa’s prints from this period are among his most dynamic and remain popular with collectors interested in Meiji-period war imagery. Active across the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods, he produced prints depicting key historical events, such as the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese wars, as well as natural disasters like the 1896 tsunami. Kunisada, also known as Toyokuni III, was born in the Honjo district of Edo as Kunisada Tsunoda. Kunisada’s family owned a small hereditary ferryboat service. Though his father, an amateur poet, died when Kunisada was a child, the family business provided some financial security. During his childhood, he showed considerable promise in painting and drawing. Due to strong familial ties with literary and theatrical circles, he spent time studying actor portraits. At age 14, he was admitted to study under Toyokuni, head of the Utagawa school. Kunisada’s woodblock print work embodies the characteristics of the Utagawa school, focusing on traditional subjects such as kabuki, bijin (beautiful women), shunga (erotic prints), and historical prints. His first known print dates to 1807, his first illustrated book to 1808. Kunisada’s art career took off from the beginning. Many of his works became overnight successes and he was considered the “star attraction” of the Utagawa school. He signed his works “Kunisada, ” sometimes with the studio names of Gototei and Kochoro affixed. In 1844, he adopted the name of his teacher and became Toyokuni III. Kunisada passed away in 1864 in the same neighborhood that he was born. He was 70 years old. Kunisada was a highly popular, and the most active, ukiyo-e print artist of the 19th century. In his time, his reputation surpassed those of his contemporaries Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi.
