Omori Hikoshichi tussling with the demon amid rain. This print is in the collection of the British Museum. Curator’s comments : Omori Hikoshichi was a warrior general serving the Ashikaga Shogunate who took the head of Kusunoki Masashige at the battle of Minatogawa in 1336. Hurrying to attend celebrations he met a beautiful young woman struggling along a mountain road. Hikoshichi carried her on his back but as they crossed a stream she turned into an evil demon, the spirit of Masashige trying to recover his heirloom sword Kikusui. The subject was often treated in warrior prints by Ukiyo-e artists and here the dramatic composition taking place in a storm is attributed to Masayoshi, a pupil of Kitao Shigemasa. The inclusion of a horse in the composition is an unusual variant. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our woodblock prints unless stated otherwise.
