The piece belongs to the famous series’Thirty-six Virtuous and Evil Beauties’ (Zen’aku Sanjuroku Bijin), which highlights prominent female figures from Japanese history and legend. This specific print depicts Kaga no Chiyo, the celebrated 18th-century haiku poet known for her profound verses and devotion to the arts. Dated to Meiji 9 (1876), this nishiki-e (multi-colored print) displays the characteristic bold palette and expressive lines of Kunichika’s Meiji-era work. It serves as a beautiful example of late ukiyo-e style, capturing the grace and character of one of Japan’s most famous literary women. Regarding the condition, the print shows overall tanning and some age-related toning consistent with its 19th-century origin, but it remains in generally good condition for display or collecting.
