The Work: This commanding print captures a crow in extreme close-up – its fierce eye, curved beak, and powerful talons filling the entire composition. The image is rendered in bold, near-monochromatic contrasts of deep black and textured grey, with the raw grain of the woodblock visible throughout, adding an almost primordial energy. The composition is strikingly modern, almost abstract in its tight cropping, yet unmistakably rooted in the Japanese tradition of bird-and-nature art (kacho-ga). About Akiyama Iwao: Born in 1921 in Niigata Prefecture, Akiyama Iwao was one of the leading figures of the post-war Japanese woodblock print movement (sosaku hanga). This is a wonderful original woodblock print hand carved and pulled by American artist Kevin Clark. It is hand signed in pencil in the lower right corner and in the lower left corner is the number 5/80 also in pencil with the artist signature stamp. It’s a nice size, approx. 9 inches X 9 inches including a 1.75 inch margin. It has wonderful color and great impression. This piece is custom framed by the artist in black solid wood and ready to hang. Total size including the frame, mat and glass is approx. 11.5 inches X 11.5 inches.

It has Ohara’s red diakokuya seal. He was part of Shin-Hanga or New print movement which had a great influence on Western artists. The print has not been examined out of what appears to be a contemporary simple fruit? Wood frame, which has a frame retailers sticker on the back. I believe the picture dates from the 1920’s/30’s. Including frame it’s 35.7 cm by 19.5 cm, and judging from other listings of this print it has been slightly trimmed. Condition is good, possibly a little discolouration at the print towards the bottom edge, though this could be part of the prints original colouration. The frame has some small knocks. I have another of Koson’s woodblock pictures in identical frame listed – Rooster and chicks. Kono Bairei – Crow. Original 19th Century Japanese Woodblock. Frame: 31 x 38 cm (12 x 15). Image: 15 x 21 cm (6 x 8). The print is in perfect condition – strong and bright, not faded. The vintage mount has a few very faint marks visible close up. The vintage frame has a few small chips at the corners, again only apparent close up. In the photos, you may notice what appear to be marks on the print, but this is in fact the antique paper itself, in which some larger fibers are visible. This is entirely original.
