Katsukawa Shunsen (Shunko II) (1762- 1830) Courtesan Ukiyo-e Woodblock. Print Frame measures 75 cm x 25cm – Wrinkles, stains, creases, chips to the lacquered frame. Sale includes the frame pictured. Due to the age and visible fragility of the ukiyo-e, frame has not been opened and the print has not been removed from the frame. Front “glass” appears to be an archival quality acrylic type plastic. Print shows stains, wrinkles, creases and possible joining or repair done along the mid section. Tanning and toning visible. Item has been stored away from direct light. Measurements are for the overall size of the piece – frame included. 29.5 inches tall (75 cm). 10 inches wide (25.4 cm). Frame is lacquered wood. Frame has several chips, nicks and scratches. There is a sizable chip (large size chip) to the frame on the upper right hand corner – showing the wood beneath the lacquer. Paper covering on the back of the frame shows punctures and rips. Frame is still sturdy and can be used as is. Vintage, Used or Antique items will show wear and imperfections. All images provided are of the item for sale. Printing method: Woodblock print. School of Japanese Art. Circa 1800, perhaps earlier (we are not experts). Paper laid onto stiff card (old). Mother outside with a young child at her feet wiggling fingers and making a silly face at the baby she holds in her arms. Very playful and appealing scene. Also shows fencing, pond, tree trunk, and distant mountains. At top is a composition in Japanese, likely a poem. Very good antique condition without notable damage. Normal fading of colors, normal age spots to corners, minor occasional toning. None of this detracts from the charming image. A scarce and wondrous piece. Formal Name: Furyu Siki-duki and Edomizaka Yau-zu Quaint Four Seasons Moon and the night rain on Edomizaka. Contents: 1 Wood block print A piece from the 1918 special edition of “Ukiyo-e Ha Gashu”. Year of publication: 1918. Size: 31×21cm (12.2×10.6 inchi). Ukiyoe-Ha-Gashu is the first complete collection of Ukiyo-e in Japan that systematically contains handwritten Ukiyo-e. The first edition was published in 1906-08 and exhibited at the Japan-England Exposition (1910). The exquisite and luxurious woodblock printing technique, which is said to have required 200 times repeated woodblocks to complete a single print, is considered worthy of special mention in the history of Japanese woodblock printing. Ukiyoe-Ha-Gashu was published in several editions, including the first edition in a limited edition of 200 copies, a top-bound edition, and a standard edition. This is the third edition of the special top-bound edition, and according to the preface to the book, This edition has been further revised and published in response to the requests of enthusiasts. The works and color woodblock prints in this edition are not much different from those in the first limited edition. There are light stains on the paper mat. This item is not new. This product is a reprint of ukiyo-e? The woodblocks are re-carved, and each sheet is hand-printed on the traditional Japanese paper “Washi”. The greatest attraction of ukiyo-e prints is the unique and soft texture of Japanese paper and woodblock printing, and the vivid colors that people of the time would have enjoyed. ¦Dimensions : 8.07inch × 15.04inch. ¦Paper : washi(Japanese tradition paper : Echizen-gami Hosho-sho). ¦A chrysanthemum flower that is believed to have been specially ordered by Hokusai’s teacher, Katsukawa Shunsho. The overall work is done in light tones, and the white chrysanthemums express the soft texture of the petals using the air printing technique. Refined, dignified, and auspicious, it is a gem that is highly appreciated for celebrations. Although Katsukawa Shunsho is less well-known than Katsushika Hokusai and Toshusai Sharaku, he played an important role in the history of ukiyo-e. The works of Katsushika Hokusai and Toshusai Sharaku may have become different depending on the flow of “portrait” that he invented. In addition, the spread of actor paintings was due to the achievements of the Torii school, and they contributed to attracting audiences to Kabuki. However, the actor paintings did not capture individuality, and sometimes the same face was lined up. Katsukawa Shunsho created a revolution by drawing actors that capture the characteristics of people.

This is a Japanese Woodblock Print by Shuncho Katsukawa. Shuncho was a student of Shunsho Katsukawa and was active from 1783 to 1795. This print is an example of Japan’s Sericulture and is loosely titled “Reeling the Thread”. The print is 10 1/4″ tall and 7 1/4″ wide. The print is framed, matted, and under glass. The frame is 19″ tall and 14″ wide. The print is in very good aged condition with no rips or tears. There is some slight folding to the bottom left corner of the print.
