OHARA KOSON Hand Colored Japanese Woodblock Print FROG on LOTUS LEAF. Early 20th century, issued 1900 – 1910, hand colored woodblock print of a frog sitting on a lotus leaf. Seal in red and black at lower right. Unframed, measures 9 7/8″ x 8 1/2″. Ohara Koson was a prolific printmaker of the twentieth century widely known for his kacho-ga, bird and flower prints. During his study with Kason, he took his artist name Koson, a partial adaptation of his teacher’s name. Early in his career, many of Koson’s prints were muted in colour and captured a sense of calmness and elegance. Occasionally the artist would choose other themes from the natural world, such as this example, with a frog sitting on a lotus leaf in the rain.
