It is hand signed in pencil in the lower right corner and in the lower left corner is the artist signature stamp along with “artist proof” in pencil. It’s a nice size, approx. 11 inches X 13 inches including a 1.75-inch margin. Hand printed on Japanese handmade paper or “washi”. It has wonderful color and great impression.

Japanese Woodblock print: Utagawa Toyokuni. Woman Under Maple and Ginkgo Leaves, from the series Comparison of Beauties (Bijin awase). Originally in Edo era, this is a re-carved edition made in unknown date. About 10″ X 15 1/4″. This comes with Dark Blue Matting as shown. The matting is about 17″ X 25″. It does have 2 pieces of tape – taped down to the matting. Please see photos – you can see the bleeding on the back side of the image. We are practicing to be environmentally friendly by using used boxes, and other used packing materal. If you are not satisfied, feel free to return it within 30 days at your own expense. Clearly a beautiful piece. The COA documentation on the back is torn and not in the best shape. Subject to tear easy. Framed measures about 13.25 inches tall by about 10.25 inches. The print portion measurements look to be about 8.75 inches tall by 6.5 inches. Has minor scratches and knicks on the frame.

Antique Original Japanese Woodblock Print by Utagawa Hiroshige of a Sparrow on a Maple Tree Branch, circa 1830. The background is taupe with a natural colored sparrow on a maple tree branch with orange and green leaves. One can assume that this is from early autumn, as some of the leaves are already red. Kachôga (Flower and bird pictures) were depictions of the natural world – birds, flowers, trees, plants, grasses, insects, fishes and animals. Along with figure and landscape painting, the genre represented a primary thematic grouping within classical Chinese and Japanese art. Utagawa Hiroshige Japanese: born Ando Tokutaro 1797 – 12 October 1858, was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, considered the last great master of that tradition. Hiroshige is best known for his horizontal-format landscape series The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido and for his vertical-format landscape series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. The popular series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji by Hokusai was a strong influence on Hiroshige’s choice of subject, though Hiroshige’s approach was more poetic and ambient than Hokusai’s bolder, more formal prints. Subtle use of color was essential in Hiroshige’s prints, often printed with multiple impressions in the same area and with extensive use of bokashi (color gradation), both of which were rather labor-intensive techniques. Minor creases and stain right below the bird. Colors are quite fresh. Commensurate with age and use. Old tape at top border. Measurements: 10 1/4 x 7 3/8. This listing is for the rare Kamisaka Sekka Woodblock Print, Maple Leaves Over Bridge in Takao pictured above. This lovely woodblock was created by Sekka in 1899 and depicts a bridge in Takao (near Kyoto) surrounded by maple leaves. This may be a later impression of the first impression in 1899. I was unable to locate any impressions of this woodblock for sale! The woodblock measures about 13.5 inches long by 9.5 inches tall by sight. The frame measures 18 inches long by 15 inches tall. Condition: Framed behind glass. Slightly tilted in frame. Not examined outside of frame. Considered the father of Japanese modern design, Kamisaka Sekka was born in Kyoto in 1866 and began studying painting at the age of sixteen. A 1901 trip to the Paris International Exposition proved pivotal in his artistic career, leading to his study of modern European industrial design. Sekka became a master of the historic Japanese tradition known as Rimpa, combining this traditional Japanese aesthetic with his own innovations to create stunning designs that are both modern and timeless. Dating back to the seventeenth century, characteristics of the Rimpa school include the use of large planes of vivid color to create a flattened pictorial space, abstracted compositions, and the use of mica and gold and silver leaf. Sekka’s designs incorporate traditional Rimpa techniques and subjects, such as Japanese tales and nature scenes, with pioneering, more abstracted compositions and bright aniline dyes. In addition to paintings and woodblock prints, Sekka applied the Rimpa philosophy to decorative arts, including ceramics, lacquer ware, textiles, and screens, emphasizing the importance of beautiful design in everyday life. Sekka taught at the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts, influencing many younger artists and revitalizing traditional craft forms in Kyoto. The designs in these two fantastic series represent the pinnacle of Sekka’s career and are quintessential designs in the Rimpa tradition. The National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto presented the first comprehensive retrospective exhibit on Sekka in 2003, with the show traveling to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Birmingham Museum of Art in Alabama.
