ON A DELICATE RICE PAPER CALLED WASHI. THIS ART IS OFTEN ATTRIBUTED TO BENJI ASADA OR UCHIDA. SNOWY SCENES / RED PAGODA, BRIDGE OVER WATER, MOONLIT TEMPLE. These prints each measure approx 3″ x 7″. They are affixed to a white piece of paper and surrounded by a brilliant blue mat. Housed in a simple Japanese style wood frame. With the frame, this measures 12″ x 15.5″. Hanger wire on the back for an easy wall hang. Condition: The prints are EXCELLENT. The blue mat is EXCELLENT. The wooden frame has some scuffs (see pics). “Dream” by Kaoru Kawano, a stunning Wood Block Print using paint onto Japanese rice paper, not a reproduction. Stamped on the back with another block mark. There is a pencil mark on the bottom left-hand margin. It came from the estate of a collector who spent time in Japan during and brought home many valuable collectibles. And his brother was a war Photographer and also in Japan. It’s in vintage condition with signs of wear and age. Mainly in the discoloration of the white border. Pictures show any flaws. But the painting itself does not show any flaws to my untrained eye. The full sheet is 17″ x 11 1/2″ and the painting is 14.75″ x 9 1/2″. The back at the frame is wood with a wire hanger. The thin black frame appears to be handmade of wood, painted black. The white frame mat is discolored from age. Born in Hokkaido in 1916, Kawano studied at Kawabata Art School during the 1930s. He gained an international his reputation through successful solo exhibitions in North America and elsewhere. His prints frequently depict children and animals, combining Western-style elements with the tradition of woodblock printmaking. Kaoru Kawano’s works are also appreciated for the way in which they incorporate the woodgrain of the block into the design. Size of image (not including boarder): 14.75″ × 9.25″ and 17 long overall. This Dream by Kaoru Kawano wood block print on rice paper is a limited edition handmade original from Japan. The portrait orientation and medium size make it a unique addition to any art collection. Born in Tokyo, he apprenticed under the renowned artists Kunisada and Chikanobu, combining their names to create his professional identity. Kunichika specialized in yakusha-e-dramatic depictions of kabuki actors-becoming celebrated for his intimate knowledge of theatrical life. His distinctive style featured vivid reds and deep purples derived from imported German aniline dyes, departing from the softer palettes of earlier ukiyo-e masters. Recognized as a top artist throughout his career, Kunichika received commissions for the 1867 Paris International Exposition.
