The work is hand-signed and sealed in the margin and comes framed with its original paper storage box. Known for his tree-themed compositions, Hoshi’s works are highly regarded among collectors of modern Japanese prints. The artwork shows slight age-related toning and minor surface soiling. It has been stored for a long period and remains well preserved overall. Born in Niigata, Japan, he worked as an elementary school teacher in Taiwan before returning to Japan after World War II to pursue art. He graduated from Musashino University of Fine Arts in 1956 and developed a unique style combining traditional woodblock techniques with contemporary themes. His early work focused on stars and constellations, but from the 1970s, he became celebrated for his mystical tree prints, often enhanced with gold and silver leaf. This is an AUTHENTIC, SIGNED (both pencil signed and re d sealed) wood block print from KAORU KAWANO. You are probably aware that Mr. Kawano was a modern artist that lived from about 1916 to 1965. This piece is believed to date to the 1950s. Kawano is known for his wood block prints, many of which focus on children. This print is usually referred to as Girl with Mask (or Girl with Red Mask). Again, this piece is signed with the red mark in the bottom left hand corner and then also SIGNED IN PENCIL in the general area below the red mark. Our apologies that the pencil signature was a little hard to capture on the dark background in photos, but hopefully you can see it. This is a nice sized piece that is big enough to be impactful to your collection but small enough to not require a large area to display. As framed, the entire piece is approximately sized at 15.5″ tall x 19.75″ long x. Open, viewable area of the print not covered by the mat or frame is sized at 10″ tall x 14.75″ long. We did not remove the print from the frame since is so nicely framed but presume the print size to be about 11″ x 16″. As framed, the picture weighs 3 pounds. The back contains a label from the framing shop of Max Hill Shop in the French Quarters in New Orleans. We inspected from outside the glass using a 10X magnifying loupe with no damage found on the print. T his piece is in wonderful pre-owned condition with no major signs of damage or excessive wear. Print is still nice and vivid. There is only very minor wear to the frame and so the piece would be ready to hang as is. In summary, this is an eye-catching print that looks much newer than it approximate 60 years that is accented nicely. A flattering, organic feeling mat and frame combination. Fantastic composition by Hasui Kawase! This image depicts a woman walking toward Gokoku Temple in Tokyo on a rainy spring day. Kawase’s impeccable skill and rich use of color is breathtaking. He was best known for his printmaking and Japanese landmark subjects. This is a gorgeous example of his work in great condition for its age. Kawase Hasui is considered one of the most important Japanese landscape artists of the 20th century. His prints, produced under the guidance and stern eye of his publisher, Watanabe Shozaburo, are the modern continuation of the unforgettable works by Hiroshige and Hokusai, the 19th-century masters of this genre. As none other, he could evoke Japan of the eventful interwar period. Hasui’s work enjoyed huge popularity from his very first print of 1918. In contrast to his illustrious 19th-century predecessors, his work was immediately successful in the rest of the world.
