Formal Name: Rakuzan kacho-gafu. Plum and Little Sparrow. Feature: Japanese Woodblock Print, Bird. Contents: First edition made by Rakuzan. Year of publication: 1929. Light foxing in the margins. Rakuzan was born in Kyoto. When he was young, he studied under Takeuchi Seiho, a pioneer of modern Japanese painting and a representative painter of Kyoto painting. The woodblock prints of Rakuzan have been reprinted using the same woodblock prints in recent years, but this print is a valuable first edition. This item is not new. He was born in Oakland, California in 1879. He studied art at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art (San Francisco), and at the Partington Art School (San Francisco). Their plan was to stay a year and work for an advertising agency creating material to promote tourism. They fell in love with the islands, and it’s people, and stayed permanently. The Kellys immediately identified with the native Hawaiians and became their champions in images and in print. Antique Original Japanese Woodblock Print by Utagawa Hiroshige of a Sparrow on a Maple Tree Branch, circa 1830. The background is taupe with a natural colored sparrow on a maple tree branch with orange and green leaves. One can assume that this is from early autumn, as some of the leaves are already red. Kachôga (Flower and bird pictures) were depictions of the natural world – birds, flowers, trees, plants, grasses, insects, fishes and animals. Along with figure and landscape painting, the genre represented a primary thematic grouping within classical Chinese and Japanese art. Utagawa Hiroshige Japanese: born Ando Tokutaro 1797 – 12 October 1858, was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, considered the last great master of that tradition. Hiroshige is best known for his horizontal-format landscape series The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido and for his vertical-format landscape series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. The popular series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji by Hokusai was a strong influence on Hiroshige’s choice of subject, though Hiroshige’s approach was more poetic and ambient than Hokusai’s bolder, more formal prints. Subtle use of color was essential in Hiroshige’s prints, often printed with multiple impressions in the same area and with extensive use of bokashi (color gradation), both of which were rather labor-intensive techniques. Minor creases and stain right below the bird. Colors are quite fresh. Commensurate with age and use. Old tape at top border. Measurements: 10 1/4 x 7 3/8. Original Japanese woodblock print. Sparrow and Pomegranate, by. Little is known about the print artist Jo, he was active from the 1920s to the 1930s and produced a small number of beautiful Kacho-e birds and flowers prints in the vertical o-tanzaku or large poem slip format. After the death of noted collector Robert O. Muller in 2003, prints by Jo were found in Muller’s collection, generating new interest in Jo’s rarely found works. Published by Kato Junji, these beautiful designs feature lovely, delicate line work, fine detail, and deluxe treatments such as bokashi shading and mica. These first edition prints are extremely rare. Note the shimmering mica in the background color, captured especially in the first photo. This print has excellent color and detail as shown. There is some tape residue on the backside, used to steady it in the frame it was previously housed in. Image size is approximately 14 1/4″ tall by 6 1/2″ wide, plus margins as shown. Shiba on verso in red [all as shown by the detailed photos]. This rare and original Hiroshige Woodblock Kacho-e print is in. Clear and clean image. Colors, original narrow margins with intact image. And even age toning. It was printed on handmade mulberry paper tipped in on a rice paper along the top edge on verso. Ample photos [front, back, and details] in high resolution are provided for your convenience of identification and judging its. Flaws to note: the flaws are quite minor as noted below: there are several unobtrusive folding creases, two small tape residue on backside along the top edge. And some slight fading of the red color as shown by the detailed photos. 1797 1858 was one the leading members of Ukiyoe artists of the Edo period quite famous for his landscape and flower/bird prints. Even though very prolific, his Original woodblock prints. Rare in the market. [delicately printed with some embossing on the bird]. Was unique in that. It was a product of a collaboration with a ten-year-old girl (a neighbor) as noted in the print. She either seriously contributed to the design of the print or served as a muse for Hiroshige, in any event, it is a rare reflection on his playfulness and his artistic personality.
