Mostly directly from Japan. Says its from sometime in 1800’s. The print has blemishes, marks, tiny pin hole but in good shape for its age. In a beautiful gold leaf period frame. Note the frame has been touched up with gold leaf but real nice solid wood old frame. Would look nice any where. Frame measures – 21 inches by 17 inches. Picture without mat-13 1/4 by 8 1/2. I had it put in a new acid free mat. Would look great on any wall that’s why my wife and I bought it over 30 years ago.

For your consideration is a. Vintage Japanese Woodblock Print, Hand Colored Sumo Wrestler, Named Artist, Syunsen. The Romanization of his given name varies and at the suggestion of Maribeth Graybill, The Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Curator of Asian Art at the Portland Art Museum, I have used Harunobu???? , which is how the website of the Chiba City Museum of Art shows his name. Other Romanizations of his name include Hishikawa Syunsen, Hishikawa Shunsen and Hishikawa Harusen. The artist worked for several publishers including Matsuki Heikichi, the publisher of this collection’s print, Table of Contents for the series Instructive Models of Lofty Ambition. He designed at least one sumo print for Heikichi. I have tried to describe this item to the best of my ability.
