This design was originally published in 1953 by the Yoshida Hanga Studio. We are offering a posthumously printed image, made from the original blocks, and acquired directly from the Yoshida family. While it is signed in the block, it still looks like it is pencil signed to an untrained eye. To avoid any misunderstanding, the Yoshida Hanga Studio also included the seal of the printer on the reverse. The image measures 9 1/2 x 14 1/2 inches, plus full margins. The condition is excellent. Up until his father passed away in 1950, Toshi Yoshida primarily produced works that were reminiscent of his father’s landscape prints. His later works include a wide assortment of subjects, styles and techniques. Don’t settle for a giclee or other mechanical reproduction. These woodblock prints are made using the same printing process as the original pencil signed run, under the supervision of the artist’s family and meeting their exacting standards.

The works of genius artists such as Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige astonished the world and had a profound impact on artistic culture. The production of woodblock prints is based on the complete division of labor. In “traditional woodblock prints, ” which have been handed down since ancient times, the processes of “underpainting, ” “engraving, ” and “printing” are carried out by top-class craftsmen who have mastered the secrets of each process. Only when each of these skilled craftsmen work in unison with the other three can a work of art with a high degree of perfection be created. Namiki Hajime is a woodblock printmaker. The painter refers to the artist. He determines all aspects of the work, from composition to depiction and color. The “engraver” carves the woodblocks based on the rough sketch. The “printer” mixes the pigments and repeatedly prints them on the paper. The work is finally completed after a rigorous examination of color and print quality. Although woodblock prints are always tense and time-consuming, they boast a unique artistic quality that cannot be experienced anywhere else. Unlike printed matter, woodblock prints are produced in limited quantities and are not available in unlimited supply. This is because the quality of the woodblocks deteriorates with each printing, and the woodblocks are eventually disposed of. Craftsmen who do not tolerate any compromise limit the number of prints they produce and put their hearts and souls into their work in order to produce only the most satisfactory works. The artist name is Tsuchiya Koitsu and measures 16 1/2″ X 11 1/2″ large Oban. The print depicts The blooming Wisteria And Half Moon Bridge At Tanmangu shrine in Komeido in the rain. The overall condition of the print is good considering it’s age. However please note the slight fraying on one edge of the print. Their is also some old mounting tape residue on the under side on all four corners. This does not appear to be a reproduction as indicated by the aged coloration of the borders.
