Edition / Tentative date of print: Early Post-War period. Non color breaking scratch / indentations to the lower margin and lower quadrant of the print. Visible on close inspection when held under bright light at an angle. You can feel the indentations with your finger. The print is glued on the upper corners to the folio style matting as pictured. You can see a slight wrinkle in these two spots. Some foxing and age stains visible in the “white” areas. Chip to the lower left margin. Possibly printer’s defect. Light toning / tanning to the paper. Bug holes and lots of spotting to the folio. All images and scans are of the actual print for sale. Size of folio: 18 inch x 14.5 inch approx. Yurimoto studied under renowned masters such as Shoen Uemura and Suisho Nishiyama, and her work was accepted into prestigious exhibitions like the Nitten and Teiten. She is also recognized as the wife of the celebrated Bijinga (beauty painting) master, Daizaburo Nakamura. This captivating print depicts a woman in a black kimono playing a taiko drum. The print boasts exceptionally high-quality carving and printing (suri), a testament to the skill involved in its creation. This is a rare first impression (hatsuzuri) from the prestigious Kyoto Hanga-in (Kyoto Print Institute), a renowned publisher. 28.5 cm (11.2 in) x 41 cm (16.1 in). Condition: As shown in the photos. For a print of its age, the condition is above average. There are minor foxing (small stains), slight creasing, and adhesive residue on the reverse side from previous mounting. There are traces of pigment in the margin (white border) areas. This is a common characteristic and indeed evidence of a hand-printed woodblock print , where slight imperfections from the printing process are expected. Your understanding is appreciated. From an estate sale with many fine Asian antiques in Los Angeles. Two women, one with a little boy on her back, examine the potted plants a street vendor has for sale. On offer are a potted plum bonsai and adonis flowers (fukujuso) in variously shaped pots, so we know the setting is the New Year. The lantern mount behind the vendor, decorated with paper and plant streamers, also signals the beginning of spring. This print belongs to a series of twenty designs depicting groups of people from various classes wearing elegant street clothes. Measures approximately 10″ x 15.75″. I removed it from its frame to get a closer look. The frame has been discarded. Contact me with any questions.

Antique UTAGAWA KUNIYOSHI Japanese Woodblock Tametomo Women Picking Fruit c1850. Original Antique UTAGAWA KUNIYOSHI Japanese Woodblock Part of triptych. Tametomo in his island kingdom, seated on a rock, watching native women picking fruit and diving for awabi (abalone). This is a lovely and very rare antique original print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi women picking fruit by the sea. It is right sheet from triptych and comes with a stamped and hand written Certificate from Sekai. Please note that the last photo is for reference only, source: Kuniyoshi Project, 2024. Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798- 1861) was one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting. He was a member of the Utagawa school. The range of Kuniyoshi’s subjects included many genres: landscapes, women, Kabuki actors, cats, and mythical animals. He is known for depictions of the battles of legendary samurai heroes. His artwork incorporated aspects of Western representation in landscape painting and caricature. Condition: Very good condition. Colors are fresh, mild fading and rubbing commensurate with age and use. Lightly taped to matting (easily removable). Framed under glass with black lacquer frame. Last photo for reference only. 4 1/4 x 9 5/8 inches. Overall: 17 x 12. Unless described as being new, the items for sale are vintage or used and it may show evidence of wear.
