Ukiyo-e were printed several times since Edo period, it is a print using the traditional method. It refers to the technique of creating multiple pictures by transferring or transcribing ink from a woodblock that is carved into japanese style paper. For items condition please see photos and comment. Please understand that we occurred a simple check so there might be little oversight. We try to photograph and describe the condition as accurately as possible. Although, the condition of the item may be felt worse than our description due to individual subjectivity. A large dragon on a pine tree is listening to the music. A beautiful Meiji A- copy surimono. Surimono are privately issued Japanese prints for special occasions. Since these were commissioned by a wealthy person or by a poet, they often included luxury details, such a metallic inks and elaborate embossing. Surimono typically were 8 x 9 inches (20.5 x 23 cm). Size 7.3 inches x 8.3 inches. Framed in gold metal frame size 14″ x 14″. If you do not want the frame. Contact me for adjusted price. Printed on a soft thick pliable Japanese paper; extensive crisp embossing on background cloud patterns, dragon and figure. The poem is written in Old Japanese characters and is difficult to translate. Very good condition with light toning, slight soil in lower area, tape remnants on back.

He was illegitimate son of the samurai who served under the Tokugawa shogunate. Gakutei’s mother later married to the man from Yashima klan what explaining the artist’s name. For some time he worked in Osaka focusing chiefly on privately commissioned woodblock prints called surimono, also worked as book illustrator. In addition to printmaking he wrote’kyoka'(comic poems), often illustrating these verses in his prints. Gakutei also known through out Japan as a writer. He translated and illustrated the 16th century Chinese novel’Jorney to the West’. This print is depicting the young beauty with’karako’ (Chinese Boy which often alludes to Hotei). Hotei is the God of Contentment and Happiness. Published in early Meiji period. Size (8 1/2″ X 7 1/2″), unmounted, unframed. The colors are bright and unfaded, embellished in gold and embossing.
