Originally published by Shippo Poetry Club. This print published in early Meiji period. Artist was born in Edo as Harunobu Sugavara around 1786. He was illegitimate son of the samurai who served under the Tokugawa shogunate. Gakutei’s mother later married to the man from Yashima klan what explaining the artist’s name. For some time he worked in Osaka focusing chiefly on privately commissioned woodblock prints called surimono, also worked as book illustrator. In addition to printmaking he wrote’kyoka'(comic poems), often illustrating these verses in his prints. Gakutei also known through out Japan as a writer. He translated and illustrated the 16th century Chinese novel’Jorney to the West’. This print is depicting the young beauty with box with fish. She symbolizing God Ebisu (Webisu). Daikoku is the God of Fisherman and Luck. Published in early Meiji period. Size (8 1/2″ X 7 1/2″), unmounted, unframed. The colors are bright and unfaded, embellished in gold and embossing.
