Thank you for visiting. Tsuchiya Koitsu – “Yotsuya Arakiyokocho” Woodblock Print. This is a beautiful woodblock print by the renowned Shin-hanga artist Tsuchiya Koitsu, titled Yotsuya Arakiyokocho. He is recognized as one of the leading artists of the Shin-hanga movement, often mentioned alongside Kawase Hasui and Yoshida Hiroshi. Born Koichi, he moved to Tokyo and initially apprenticed with a woodblock carver. In 1886, he became a live-in apprentice to Kobayashi Kiyochika, a relationship that continued until 1904. Due to illness and the decline of ukiyo-e, Koitsu temporarily stepped away from his artistic career. However, his talent was rediscovered by Watanabe Shozaburo at the 17th memorial exhibition for Kiyochika. It wasn’t until Koitsu was over 60 years old that his name became widely known in the woodblock print world. Subsequently, he collaborated with the publisher Doi Teiichi, consistently producing beautiful landscape prints depicting Japan’s scenery. These charges are the responsibility of the purchaser.

White squares are 1″ x 1″. 10 9/16 × 16 1/16 in. (26.83 × 40.8 cm) (sheet, horizontal ban). Hiroshi Yoshida (born Hiroshi Ueda) was born in the city of Kurume, Fukuoka, in Kyushu, on September 19, 1876. He showed an early aptitude for art fostered by his adoptive father, a teacher of painting in the public schools. At age 19 he was sent to Kyoto to study under Tamura Shoryu, a well known teacher of western style painting. He then studied under Koyama Shtar, in Tokyo, for another three years. In 1899, Yoshida had his first American exhibition at Detroit Museum of Art (now Detroit Institute of Art). He then traveled to Boston, Washington, D. In 1920, Yoshida presented his first woodcut at the Watanabe Print Workshop, organized by Watanabe Shzabur (18851962), publisher and advocate of the shin-hanga movement. However, Yoshida’s collaboration with Watanabe was short partly due to Watanabe’s shop burning down because of the Great Kanto earthquake on September 1, 1923. In 1925, he hired a group of professional carvers and printers, and established his own studio. Prints were made under his close supervision. Yoshida combined the ukiyo-e collaborative system with the ssaku-hanga principle of “artist’s prints”, and formed a third school, separating himself from the shin-hanga and ssaku-hanga movement.
