Thank you for visiting. Tsuchiya Koitsu – “Yotsuya Arakiyokocho” Woodblock Print. This is a beautiful woodblock print by the renowned Shin-hanga artist Tsuchiya Koitsu, titled Yotsuya Arakiyokocho. Please note there is no publisher’s seal. 36.3 cm x 24 cm (14.29 in x 9.45 in). Condition: No noticeable scratches or stains. He is recognized as one of the leading artists of the Shin-hanga movement, often mentioned alongside Kawase Hasui and Yoshida Hiroshi. Born Koichi, he moved to Tokyo and initially apprenticed with a woodblock carver. In 1886, he became a live-in apprentice to Kobayashi Kiyochika, a relationship that continued until 1904. Due to illness and the decline of ukiyo-e, Koitsu temporarily stepped away from his artistic career. However, his talent was rediscovered by Watanabe Shozaburo at the 17th memorial exhibition for Kiyochika. It wasn’t until Koitsu was over 60 years old that his name became widely known in the woodblock print world. Subsequently, he collaborated with the publisher Doi Teiichi, consistently producing beautiful landscape prints depicting Japan’s scenery. These charges are the responsibility of the purchaser.
