FEROCIOUS SAMURAI! Orig. Antique Japanese Woodblock TOYOKUNI III / Kunisada
What an odd and bizarre image: a ferocious, determined samurai clad in an animal skin with a flaming torch in his mouth! The Victoria and Albert Museum in London holds a copy of this print. No doubt it’s represented in other museum collections throughout the world. This is a single oban sized sheet. Apparently it was originally part of a triptych of warriors, but was separated from the other sheets at some point in the past. By Toyokuni III / Kunisada, circa 1850. The print is fully signed by Kunisada and his printer. I believe some of the smaller, circular stamps give a date, the year in which they were printed. The paper is the old fibrous paper used throughout the 1800’s. The colors have saturated the sheets leaving strong ghost images on the reverse. One of the signs of a true antique woodblock. The sheet is approximately 9 3/4 by 14 inches. Condition is very good. The colors are stronger than my photos show. This particular portfolio is virtually all triptychs, with a few singles. This is one of those singles. Little edge wear, no tears or repairs. It’s a very good example of Kunisada’s work, an unusual image at a reasonable price. Please do shop around and compare. Please ask any questions you may have. I’d be happy to answer. I value the things I sell. Thank you for looking.
