From the series “One Hundred No Dramas” (Nogaku hyakuban). At 15, his mother married Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, the famous engraver ukiyo-e and received from his father-his new name as well as the teachings of the engraving. Later Kogyo became a student of another well-known artist, Ogata Gekko, and received his master a new name – Kogyo. The work of Tsukioka Kogyo represents the vast majority of scenes illustrating the Noh theater though he also made some works on the nature and drawings illustrating the Russo-Japanese War. This is the series of prints on the old traditional Japanese Noh theater, published by Matsuki Heikichi that made him famous. Date : August, 1922 (Taisho 11).
