Vintage Tadashi Nakayama Woodblock Print Description and Item Information Up for sale is this vintage, matted, unframed woodblock print on paper by Tadashi Nakayama. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This print, entitled “Afternoon Shadow, ” depicts a stylized horse. The print is in tones including black, white, yellow, gray, and ochre with gilt or gold leaf details. Along its top edge, the print is affixed to a thick cardstock backing; a golden yellow mat board is hinged to the backing. The print paper measures approximately 21 1/2 inches by 13 7/8 inches. The sight area within the mat border is approximately 18 1/8 inches by 10 3/8 inches. The mat measures about 24 1/2 inches by 16 3/8 inches. This item weighs 12.8 ounces, unpacked. It would be a fine addition to a collection of Japanese fine art prints. Identification This vintage woodblock print, “Afternoon Shadow, ” is by Tadashi Nakayama, a well-known Japanese artist. It is from 1967, and it is number 59 out of an edition of 85 pieces. Beneath the image, the following notations are in pencil, 1967 T Nakayama 59/85. On the back side of the print paper, there is a red ink chop mark. Beneath the mat, written on the cardstock backing, is the following, Gogo No Kageri (Afternoon Shadow) An Original Wood Block Print by Contemporary Artist T. Next to this notation is a label from the gallery, T. Shiota, which was located on Sutter Street in San Francisco. He is known for woodblock prints with themes of butterflies, long haired girls, and horses. In his early pieces, he used colors such as dark grays and browns, with metallic accents. Later, he used brighter colors. Nakayama’s woodblocks were created with up to fifty different stages of printing, including gold and silver leaf and metallic inks. He exhibited in Rome, Italy, at CWAJ Exhibits in Tokyo, at the Krakow International Print Biennial in Poland, in Bethesda, Maryland, at the International Biennial Exhibition of Prints in Tokyo, and in Milan, Italy. The paper has minor rippling, as made. The print paper has minor discoloration, more so to the back side than to the front. The mat looks good overall, with minor spotting.
