Toshi Yoshida Japanese Woodblock Print Framed! Titled: Pagoda in Kyoto. Signed: Toshi Yoshida pencil-signed? A vintage Toshi Yoshida Japanese woodblock print. A warm sunset scene with cool colors featuring a traditional pagoda with an ancient willow tree beautifully reflected in the pond in the foreground. Gathered from the internet. T oshi Yoshida was born in Tokyo in 1911 and lived until 1995. Was a Japanese printmaking. Artist associated with the sosaku-hanga. Movement, and the son of renowned shin-hanga. Toshi Yoshida prints are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Art Institute of Chicago, the British Museum in London and other international museum collections. I believe this to be a “lifetime edition print” with an original pencil-signed signature. This is based on the lack of a visible imprint. When viewed on an angle in the light. From that you would see from a blocked-signed signature post-death, and the shiny look of the graphite pencil lead from the signature when viewed in the same way. However, note that I have no deep knowledge of Japanese woodblock print age and signature verification and do not claim to be an expert in this area. The print was professionally framed. Kabutoya Galleries label with artist, title and medium listed on back (see photos). Vintage framing shop label on back (see photos). Double matting, with outer matte lavender in color and inner black border. Silver frame with a brushed effect on the sides (frame is easily removable, see photos). Woodblock print has good colors, and clear artist marks, title and signature. Note the print itself is fixed (glued) to the matte backing and front, and is therefore sandwiched between the matte front and back. On very close inspection, there are visible bubbled areas on some of the edges where the print is raised from this process (see the last few close-up photos). Frame is in very good condition, however there is a crack to the glass (reflective glass) in the right, bottom corner, which should be replaced. (Please read the condition description carefully and enlarge and view photos as part of the condition description, since the print is not returnable). Framed this measures 13 inches x 16 inches. Full print itself measures 8 inches x 10-1/2 inches. Matting border measure 1-3/4 inches. Please note, I have no deep knowledge of Japanese woodblock prints, and the information I’ve provided above comes from internet research and the labels on the back of the framed print.
