The Frame Up gallery, Los Angeles, signed in ink on back. This is a lovely and very rare antique original print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi of a woman playing with a cat. Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798- 1861) was one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting. He was a member of the Utagawa school. The range of Kuniyoshi’s subjects included many genres: landscapes, women, Kabuki actors, cats, and mythical animals. He is known for depictions of the battles of legendary samurai heroes. His artwork incorporated aspects of Western representation in landscape painting and caricature. Condition: Very good condition. Colors are very fresh, mild fading and rubbing commensurate with age and use. Framed and matted under glass in fine black lacquer frame with metal corners. 20 3/4 x 16 3/4 x 1 inches; woodblock size: 14 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches. Weight: 4 lbs 15 oz.
