Original Japanese woodblock print. Sparrow and Pomegranate, by. Little is known about the print artist Jo, he was active from the 1920s to the 1930s and produced a small number of beautiful Kacho-e birds and flowers prints in the vertical o-tanzaku or large poem slip format. After the death of noted collector Robert O. Muller in 2003, prints by Jo were found in Muller’s collection, generating new interest in Jo’s rarely found works. Published by Kato Junji, these beautiful designs feature lovely, delicate line work, fine detail, and deluxe treatments such as bokashi shading and mica. These first edition prints are extremely rare. Note the shimmering mica in the background color, captured especially in the first photo. This print has excellent color and detail as shown. There is some tape residue on the backside, used to steady it in the frame it was previously housed in. Image size is approximately 14 1/4″ tall by 6 1/2″ wide, plus margins as shown.
