MASAMI TERAOKA // Sarah and Octopus Shunga // Original Modern Woodblock Print. 76/200 by Masami Teraoka, 2001. 29-color woodblock made from hand-carved blocks of cherry wood, printed on Hosho paper. Print: 10-3/8 x 15-3/4 inches / 26.4 x 40 centimeters. Matted in acid-free, archival sleeve: 16 x 20 inches / 40.1 x 50.8 centimeters. Masami Teraoka was born in Onomichi, Japan in 1936. In 1954-55 he attended Kwansei Gakuin University in Kobe, Japan where he earned a B. When he was 25 he came to America, and attended the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles (1964-68) where he received both B. Masami was influenced by both Ukiyo-e artists of Edo, Japan and American Pop artists of the 1960’s. In his work he tries to express his feelings about these two diverse cultures. The people and props that he uses are symbols of both the contemporary life he experiences and the venerable Japanese traditions he admires. He looks at his paintings as Kabuki plays: He is the director and he has to be careful casting each actress and actor because the strength of each work depends on how he scripts, draws, and paints each one. He calls his work Masami-za, or Masami-theater. Your order will be dispatched as soon as possible! If you need it to be sent by a certain day, please let us know.
