Utagawa school Fine Erotic “Shunga” Ukiyo-e Woodblock Print. 1830s-1840s, Japan (Edo Period). Multicolor woodblock print on paper. 5 1/8 x 7 3/8 inches (image); 7 1/8 x 8 5/8 inches (sheet). Unsigned (typical of “Shunga”). Skillfully executed “bokashi” shading; light “gauffrage” (embossing) to kimonos and bodies; “burnishing” to black areas; crisp lines, highly detailed carving. Silver metallic pigments to background screen. Gold metallic “speckles” to outer surround. Private collection, California (acquired by family of American serviceman stationed in Tokyo, 1946-48). Rich colors, very fresh, no fading. A few scattered marks; slight wear; light toning. Loosely end-tipped to original folio backing. Very highly detailed and colorful “Shunga” image of an amourous couple. From an album of 12 “deluxe” prints found inside original silk-bound folio. Very clean for Shunga.
