VINTAGE LIMITED EDITION “MORNING PRACTICE” LARGE MAIKO – GEISHA SIGNED AND SEALED JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT BY MORITA KOHEI FROM 1977. It’s a RARE limited-edition (number 84 of only 150 made) and it’s HAND-SIGNED and sealed. It measures 22 ” x 17″ (image 16 3/4″ x 12″) and features a beautiful Maiko (Geisha trainee) sitting Japanese style (on her hind legs) with her hands folded on her lap. She’s wearing a wonderful kimono with chrysanthemums, leaves and spirals (suggesting water/ocean currents/waves) along with a colorful obi (sash) and ribbon around her waist. Her long black hair is tied up in a nice coiffure with a hair band, decorative stick on the back and a flower on the front. The lower-right side has a Morning Glory flower arrangement propped up with a bamboo stick. The lower-left side has a storage bag and folded-up fan. The upper-left side has a bell with a decorative paper ringer. The lower-left corner has a red seal inside the image translated as “Kôhei” (Morita Kôhei). The lower-left margin has two lines of sealed writing translated as “Maiko Yondai” (Four Topics of Maiko) and “Asa Geiko” (Morning Practice). The bottom left margin is HAND-SIGNED in pencil translated as “limited edition number 84 of 150 prints” and the bottom right margin is HAND-SIGNED in pencil translated as Kôhei. The lower-right margin has two lines HAND-SIGNED in pencil translated as “Hori, Engraver – Bunju Reizô” and Suri, Printer – Toda Kan (or Yutaka). ” The lower-left outer margin area has a faint “Morita Kôhei water mark. The lower-left corner on the back has some old Japanese writing probably by the original owner or framer (see photo). This vintage RARE limited edition Japanese woodblock print is in pretty good condition for being 46 years old. It was carefully removed from the old matting and frame. The images have good color and detail. The upper-right side and lower-right side area has some old scattered lite microscopic foxing dots which doesn’t detract. The outer margin area has some lite stain spots, horizontal marks, a few old tape residue marks and toning from age not affecting the images. The right side and lower-right outer margin area has stain spots not affecting the images. The washi paper sheet has two small slits in the lower margin area and a pinhole bottom-left of the artist’s signature not affecting the images. Please see photos for condition. This vintage woodblock print will mat/frame nicely! Please review our STELLAR FEEDBACK which references great products and service.
