Hasui Kawase Toshogu Shrine at Spring Dusk Shin Hanga Woodblock Print, early ed
Kawase Hasui: Toshogu Shrine at Spring Dusk Shin-Hanga Woodblock Print. From the estate of an art collector of mid-century prints and paintings, this beautiful original Hasui woodblock was published by Watanabe in 1948 and shows the Toshogu shrine in Ueno with lovely cherry blossoms around and moon above all printed with beautiful colors. The print is #491 in the Mokuhanga Shu, Hasui’s book of prints published by Watanabe. This is an older edition, not a modern Watanabe Heisei edition. The woodblock sheet measures approximately 15 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches and the image about 14 1/4 x 9 1/2 inches. The woodblock is in good condition with strong color and a vivid impression – there are some small folds and wrinkles visible in the upper part of the frame if you look at had a certain angle, though barely visible when presented straight on. I’ve tried to show them in the pictures. I have not examined the print out of the frame (the frame is dated 1985). Feel free to ask for more details or pictures. I have another of the same print for sale, from the same time period (although a different Watanabe J stamp), which is slightly more expensive as it is in slightly better condition.
