Hiroshige Kanaya #24 from 53 Stations of Tokaido Original Woodblock 1833
#16 from the 53 Stations of the Tokaido. Publisher: Hoeido / Takenouchi Magohachi. From the first of the many editions of prints that Hiroshige made of the great Tokaido Road – the artery that connected Edo to Kyoto. There are, of course, other landscape series, some of which are rarer, certain of them much rarer, and which contain many masterpieces, besides his first Tokaido set, but the latter remains his magnum opus, as it was through this he made his fame as a landscape artist. Very good colors, with the faint flush of pink on the horizon in line with some of the better impressions held in major museums around the world. Crease running diagonally across the sheet and some waviness in one corner. Left side has a strip of japan paper running along the margin that has come loose on one end. 9 x 13.75 inches.
