Kawase Hasui Japanese Woodblock Print Rain at Omiya Japan Vintage Unframed Art Description and Item Information Up for sale is this vintage woodblock print on paper by the well-known Japanese artist, Kawase Hasui. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This nocturnal scene depicts cottages near a body of water; raindrops fall from the sky, as warm, orange light is emitted from the cottage windows. The print is not matted or framed. The image area measures approximately 14 3/4 inches by 10 3/8 inches. Two of the edges of the paper are straight and two are irregular, as made. The paper measures approximately 16 3/4 inches by 12 inches. This would be a desirable addition to a collection of Japanese works of art on paper. Identification This print is known as “Rain at Omiya” by Kawase Hasui (1883 – 1957). The exact age of this vintage print is not known. It was inside its original, vintage frame when I acquired it, which I removed and discarded because it was broken. It has markings, as shown. Per Wikipedia, Hasui is considered one of modern Japan’s most important and prolific printmakers. He was part of the shin-hanga movement, having depicted traditional subjects with a style influenced by Western art. Hasui is known for landscape works which display atmospheric effects and natural lighting. He designed over 600 prints throughout his career, which lasted almost 4 decades. The government of Japan recognized Hasui as a Living National Treasure because of his significant contribution to Japanese culture. Condition This unframed print looks great overall, as shown. The colors are saturated. There are no tears, holes, creases, or stains. Near the upper edge of the back side, there are small paper/tape residue areas where the print was previously affixed to a board. Terms of Sale 1.
