THREE ANTIQUE JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINTS A TRIPTYCH BY CHIKANOBU DATED 1884 A Poignant Triptych Scene from the Kabuki Play commonly known as “The Higashiyama Storybook, ” based on a true story. The scene shows Togo saying goodbye to his family, fondly cradling his son Kunimatsu’s chin with his hand as his oldest son tugs on his coat. At left, Togo’s wife Omine holds their youngest son to her chest, while outside with window, snow falls over the water, blanketing the ground and the pine tree framing the view. The actors include Ichikawa Danjuro IX as Togo and Kunitaro III as Omine. Nice expressive figures, detailed with burnishing in the black coat and kimono collars, and the simulated lacquer frame bordering the image.
