Moon Pine at Ueno Hill. The famous pine known as “Moon Pine” once stood near the stone steps leading down to Benzaiten at Shinobazu Pond in Ueno. Its branches were trained into a circular, moon-like shape. Hiroshige composed the scene so that the distant townscape of Hongo can be seen through the circular opening of the pine branches, creating a striking and mysterious effect, as if viewed through a telescope. The bold use of perspective, combined with the finely detailed depiction of the pine in the foreground, results in a highly effective and memorable composition.
