Kuniyoshi Utagawa was a prominent ukiyo-e artist during the late Edo period. Born on November 15, 1798, and passing away on April 14, 1861, he is celebrated for his richly imaginative and innovative designs, extraordinary ideas, and precise draftsmanship, which extended the appeal of his works beyond the traditional bounds of ukiyo-e. Throughout his career, Kuniyoshi used various artist names. From the early Bunsei era to the first year of the Man’en era, he was known as Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi. He later adopted names such as Saihosha (mid-Bunsei era), Chooro (from the early Tenpo era to the first year of the Man’en era), Setsutani, and Senshin. He also took on the surname Utagawa and used the kyoka (comic poetry) name Ryuen and the pen name Ichimyoukai Teibo. Kuniyoshi is recognized as one of the leading ukiyo-e artists of the late Edo period. He produced a multitude of works that showcased his rich artistic imagination, unique and unconventional ideas, and assured drawing skills.
