In the center, the samurai Kajiwara Kagesue fights off a group of Taira attackers, his back against an ancient plum tree. He grips his sword above his head with both hands as he faces his enemies, who wield naginata and swords. He has already sent one opponent sprawling on the ground at right, his antlered helmet lying nearby. At upper left, his father, Kajiwara Kagetoki, races on horseback to assist him, galloping along with his spear above his head with both hands, ready to defend his son.
