It depicts the famous entertainment district of Soemoncho in Osaka at dusk, with traditional buildings illuminated by paper lanterns. He later edition print captures the atmosphere of the area, with the warm glow of the lanterns contrasting with the deepening shadows. It’s part of the “Collection of Scenic Views of Japan II, Kansai Edition” series. Printed with careful attention to detail and showcasing Hasui’s mastery of light and shadow, this later edition preserves the atmosphere and elegance of Hasui’s original work. The print bears a Kawase signature in the lower right along with a publisher’s seal. The print title and date are covered by the framing but the framer has included a xerox of the print showing the full margins which reveal this information. This print is beautifully framed with Hawaiian koa wood. Frame may show minor wear. Birth-Death: 1883 (Meiji 16) – 1957 (Showa 32).
