Antique Original Japanese Woodblock Print Triptych by Inoue Tankei Emperor Observing Parade c. Presented is a beautiful Japanese full oban-size original woodblock print created by the renowned artist of the Meiji period, Tankei (Yasuji) Inoue (1864 – 1889). The Emperor is portrayed mounted on a horse, observing a military parade at the Aoyama parade ground. Please note – this is the lifetime portrait of the Emperor. Inoue Yasuji was the most talented student of Kiyochika Kobayashi. He had the potential to become one of the great masters of Japanese printmaking during the Meiji era. Tragically, his life was cut short when he died at the age of only 25. By the time Kiyochika gave up Western-style landscapes in 1881, Yasuji had designed only eight prints in his own name, but he perpetuated his master’s style over the next three years, particularly in the format of small postcard-size prints. Both Kiyochika and Tankei incorporated elements of French Impressionism into their woodblock prints. This is predominantly through the use of shadow and light, not used previously within ukiyo-e. There would often be two prints of the same scene, one depicting day and the other night. The print was made using the Japanese woodblock technique in 1885 during Yasuji lifetime. All first (left) sheet of the triptych is signed with Yasuji’s signature and stamped with the publisher’s seal.
