Antique Original Japanese Woodblock Print by Utagawa Toyokuni I – Viewing Blossoms c. Presented is a beautiful Japanese full oban-size original woodblock print created by the renowned artist of the Edo period, Utagawa Toyokuni (1769 – 1825), also known as Toyokuni I. He was also teaching the art of printmaking. Among his pupils were such famous artists as Kunisada I and Kuniyoshi, who adopted his art name in the traditional Japanese manner – taking a part of the name of their teacher. Toyokuni I was known mostly for his prints related to the kabuki theatre, in particular his yakusha-e actor portraits, a field which he took to new heights. He also, however, produced other genres such as musha-e warrior prints, shunga erotica, and most notably bijin-ga. This print depicts a beautiful woman in a red furisode (a long-sleeved kimono for unmarried women). She walks among plum blossoms. The print is titled “Sangatsu hanami no zu, ” Viewing Blossoms in the Third Month. This is the third print in the series of twelve representing twelve months of the year. The print is framed in a wooden frame.
