Born in Niigata, Japan, he worked as an elementary school teacher in Taiwan before returning to Japan after World War II to pursue art. He graduated from Musashino University of Fine Arts in 1956 and developed a unique style combining traditional woodblock techniques with contemporary themes. His early work focused on stars and constellations, but from the 1970s, he became celebrated for his mystical tree prints, often enhanced with gold and silver leaf.
