Sadao Watanabe’s print “Sharing” (From Photo #9) Sadao Watanabe applies the unique Japanese dyeing craft of katazome to not only fabrics but also to washi paper, and has built his own unique dyeing prints of high artistic value from traditional Japanese folk art techniques, creating works of art full of freedom and humor. His works bring about a highly spiritual encounter between what is seen with the eyes and what is felt with the heart, and provide an opportunity to receive the message of the Bible in a fresh way, earning him high praise both in Japan and abroad. Sadao Watanabe Biography Born in Tokyo in 1913. In 1941, he studied katazome printmaking under Serizawa Keisuke. He received the first Japan Folk Crafts Museum Award in 1947, and won first prize in the 1958 Contemporary Japanese Print Exhibition sponsored by St. James’s Church in New York for his work Bronze Serpent, as well as numerous other awards including the Kokuga Award. His works are in the collections of museums around the world, including the National Museum of Modern Art, Ohara Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art in New York, British Museum, and the Vatican Museum of Modern Religion.
