Excellent condition 1930’s framed Yatsogiri size woodblock print of Hiroshige’s’Kambara in Snow’ aka’Evening Snow at Kambara’ from The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido Road (Tokaido Gojusan Tsugi-no Uchi). Shiota gallery on Grant Street in San Francisco in the mid to late 1930’s, and still bears the original hand written description on the back, as well as the gallery sticker. The owner of the gallery, Mr. Takezo Shiota was forced to close his shop and was compelled to enter an internment camp for Americans of Japanese descent in March of 1942. His family re-opened the gallery after the war in a different location. Shiota passed away while in the relocation camp. This is not only a wonderful example of an early 20th century imported woodblock, but also has interesting historical significance. Frame size: 8.5″w x 9″h. Print size: 5.5″w x 3.5″h.
