This is an original woodblock, print in the Mitsugiri style, from the Shin Hanga Movement by the Japanese artist Takahashi Shotei (1872 – 1945). Shin hanga movement was to revitalize the Ukiyo-e. It is titled Cherry Blossoms at Sumida Bank in Rain. This print is pre war and most likely dates to the 1920s. It was framed in Cambridge, MA by J. Olsson and art dealer active in the 1920’s and 30’s. It features two women enjoying the view of the cherry blossoms by the river while waiting out a rain shower under the thatched roof of a tea stall. On the water are several boats plying the smooth blue surface. The cherry blossoms are in full bloom as the rain comes down in diagonal streaks. The perspective is interesting, as it appears we are viewing from the side two people who are also enjoying the view. The frame measures 15 3/8 L x 7 W x 1/2 D inchs the frame border is 3/8 of an inch all the way around the print. Has a few small dings on the frame.
