Depicts a theatrical or narrative scene with elaborately dressed figures, possibly referencing a Kabuki or literary subject. The signature and seal of Utagawa Kuniyoshi are visible in the lower left corner. (bottom left) – confirms official approval for printing during the Edo period. Japanese woodblock print (Nishiki-e). 14.75″ × 10″ (37.5 × 25.4 cm). Common for Edo-period prints. Small holes and paper thinning areas. Visible, mostly near edges and upper right margin. Near upper text cartouche. Colors retain good vibrancy, particularly the blues and flesh tones. Sheet not backed, with some waviness due to age. There is visible overall toning and moderate foxing throughout the sheet, along with several small holes and areas of paper thinning, mostly near the edges and in the upper portion of the image. A small area of loss is present near the upper right corner within the text cartouche and at the bottom Samari’s foot. The paper has some waviness from age but remains intact and stable. Despite the wear, the print retains good color saturation-especially in the blue pigments and patterned garments-and the impression remains strong with clear linework. The sheet has not been backed or repaired, preserving its authenticity and original texture. Acquired from a private collection of antique Japanese prints. Old collection note on reverse identifying artist as Kuniyoshi. Original Edo-period Kuniyoshi prints in comparable condition generally sell between. Depending on subject and preservation. Depicting a group of courtiers or samurai attendants in rich blue and patterned robes. Kuniyoshi was one of the last great masters of the ukiyo-e tradition and is highly regarded for his bold linework and storytelling compositions. This print features excellent color retention and distinct line work, with visible censor and artist seals confirming its authenticity as a period impression. Moderate foxing and edge wear consistent with age.
