Kiyoshi Saito Woodblock Print Aizu in Winter, Newly Framed. Woodblock is from the Aizu in Winter series. The design of this woodblock was made in 1953 and printed in 1955. But this particular woodblock print which varies from the 1955 woodblock is a little different. The 1955 version had a dark circle around the large tree and less refined detail to the scene. This one has nothing around the base of the tree and a grey path to the left of the tree. There is more refined detail. I would place it more to the 1960s or 1970s. It has the Kiyoshi seal and is signed in pencil below the seal. It is not dated. It was self carved and self published. It is a oban yoko-e with the image being approximately 10 by 15.5. I removed the print and had it re-framed with museum glass and acrid free matt and backing. Since I was at the framer, I took pictures in the shop so you can see the front and back outside the frame. The lighting at the framer distorted the color on the reverse of the print. It looks like it is toned significantly to the side, but that is not the case. It is a very nice example and is framed in a nice wood frame. I was very pleased to see it had held up. Framed dimensions are 21″ wide by 15.5″ tall.
