The original design depicts a contemporary woman portrayed as Ono no Komachi, the celebrated Heian-period poet, in a fashionable Edo-period setting. The snake-eye umbrella serves as a visual reference to the traditional story of Komachi praying for rain. The original work is a large-format nishiki-e (polychrome woodblock print) dating to the 1790s. This piece is a reproduction of the historic Ukiyo-e design and is not an original Edo-period impression.
