A beautiful complete original suite of four large Japanese woodblock prints by the artist Toshi Yoshida. A sticker located on reverse of each print reads “FMGFA 1977″. Commissioned by the Franklin Mint Gallery of Fine Art in 1980 and published by the Yoshida family studio. Rare to find entire set that has not been broken up since issued in the 70’s. These prints are not a reproduction and make a statement when hanging. Those familiar with Yoshida’s work will appreciate their beauty. Dimensions of each frame is approximately 19” x 26.8”. Visibility inside the matt is. 12.25” x 20.25”. The set of four woodblock prints is titled “Birds of the Seasons” and e. Ach woodblock print depicts a bird in the correlating seasonal landscape. Each print is signed lower right in pencil “Toshi Yoshida” (in Kanji). Various scratches on plexiglass and chipping on frames. Slight wrinkling of prints under frame. One print is loosely fit into the frame and shifts position minimally on occasion. Dust paper on reverse is taped and wrinkled in some spots. Prints not examined outside of frames. At an early age he absorbed the techniques of old-style woodblock printing from the artisans in his father’s studio. It wasn’t until his father’s death in 1950 that Toshi broke from his past and from the naturalism landscape images Hiroshi was known for. In 1952, he started a series of abstract woodcuts, influenced by his brother, Hodaka Yoshida. From 1971 to 1994, until the last years of his life, Toshi worked almost exclusively on animal prints.
