KITAGAWA TSUKIMARO. Original Japanese Woodblock Print. A Courtesan & her Maiko
Granted to your attention amazing original woodblock print COURTESAN AND HER MAIKO by great artist KITAGAWA TSUKIMARO in 1806. He was painter and print artist, Kitagawa Utamaro’s best pupil. He began designing prints of beautiful women using the name Kikumaro. From 1804 changed his name to Tsukimaro. 1820 ceased to design prints, painting instead hanging scrolls of beauties in a style influenced by the Maruyama-Shijo school, which he signed’Kansetsu’. His last dated work is an illustration for a’kyoka’ anthology published in 1836. Full large oban size (15 1/4 X 10 1/2) untrimmed, unframed. This print printed in “aizuri-e”, the colors are great. The term aizuri-e (Japanese: “blue printed picture”) usually refers to Japanese woodblock prints that are printed entirely in blue. This print is in very good condition, reinforced by professional restorer using thin japanese washi paper on the back because of old age. Depicting two Beauties, one is cortesan and another one her attendant. The portraiture of these two beauties is excellent and created in great traditional style of Tsukimaro’s teacher Kitagawa Utamaro. The item “KITAGAWA TSUKIMARO. Original Japanese Woodblock Print.
