Original Japanese Woodblock Kikugawa Eizan Two Women and Young Boy with Painting
Original Japanese Woodblock Kikugawa Eizan. Two Women and Young Boy with Painting. Original Japanese Woodblock by Kikugawa Eizan. Two Women and Young Boy with Scroll Painting, letter and another painting, circa 1820. This image is of two women with multiple kimonos and elaborate hairstyles, the woman on the left is opening a scroll painting to reveal a painting of a man ringing a bell with calligraphy below it and showing it to to the woman on the right, that is holding what appears to be a folded letter in her hand. Below the two women is a young boy with shaved head on the ground, looking at a painting of cherry blossoms. This very same print is included in the collection of the MET museum, but I have not been able to find the exact title. The print is professionally framed and matted under glass, with matting made of raw silk, and wood frame. This is a typical theme of this artist, with beautiful women being one of his favorite subjects. While many ukiyo-e artists portrayed beautiful women in the sophisticated and ethereal Utamaro style, Eizan ushered in a new phase in the bijinga genre; although his women too wear the latest fashionable kimonos, he established his own sweet down-to-earth vision of female beauty. His works portrayed a diverse range of women from different social classes, such as the graceful young ladies of samurai families, charming daughters of merchants, or flamboyant courtesans. W e see them sleek, svelte, and elegant, or sometimes bright, colorful, and fashionable. In recent years, Eizan’s bijinga are not well-known, but these works would have profoundly influenced not only his pupil Keisai Eisen, but also such later artists as Utagawa Kunisada and Utagawa Kuniyoshi. It is no exaggeration to say that bijinga in the 19th century started from Eizan. Professionally framed and matted under glass. Have not removed it from frame, but it looks like it might not be pasted to the backing. Condition: Very minor creases, fading, and wear. Very minor paper losses and a small line that goes down the left side. Stain that appears on right matting is a shadow from light upon photographing against reflection of glass- not a stain. This print is matted with raw silk and professionally framed under glass with wood frame. Measurements: Frame: 20 x 15 inches, woodblock print (approx). 13 x 8 1/4 inches. Weight: 2 lbs 11 ounces.
