This is an original woodblock print made by the artist, not a reproduction! Beautiful antique original Japanese woodblock print “Cyclamen and Orchids” by artist Masaharu Aoyama (1893 – 1969). Aoyama is a desirable and collected woodblock artist whose prints usually sell for several hundred dollars. Description: Lovely image of white and soft pink cyclamen with a bright pink orchids arching above them. The deep green foliage in the foreground is beautifully shaded to create a sense of depth and provide a rich contrast to the delicate shades of the blossoms. Image size is approx 10″ x 15.25″. Condition: Paper is in very good condition with no tears or other damage. On reverse side of paper, some tape residue in one spot. A few very small spots on front. Image color has faded due to light exposure and the previous framing (which did not show entire image) is revealed by differences in the shade of the paper and pink color at the top of one flower. If framed in the same way (with part of the image field concealed), this will be invisible. If framed showing the entire image field, this difference will be distinct. Condition is factored into the pricing. Masaharu Aoyama was a printmaker working in the sosaku-hanga (“creative prints”) movement, which began in the early 20th century and advocated self-drawn, self-carved, self-printed works. Stylistically, sosaku-hanga prints move away from traditional Japanese aesthetics typified by ukiyo-e of the Edo and early Meiji periods and tend to lean towards abstract expressionist compositions. Aoyama attended the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and went on to produce self-printed works, although some were also printed with the Ishiyama publishing house. From a smoke-free, pet-free house. Note: Color shades may vary due to lighting and the device you are using, since screens/devices vary.
