Authentic original 1940 Japanese shin-hanga woodblock print by Kawase Hasui titled Daimotsu, Amagasaki. This print is part of the series Collection of Scenic Views of Japan II, Kansai Edition published by Watanabe Shozaburo. This highly atmospheric nocturne scene depicts an industrial waterfront under moonlight with glowing reflections across the water, drifting smoke, and silhouetted structures rendered in Hasui’s celebrated poetic style. The print displays exceptional depth and mood, with subtle bokashi gradation, luminous highlights, and refined carving characteristic of Hasui’s finest landscape works. A beautiful and increasingly sought-after example of early 20th century Japanese shin-hanga art. Original hand-pulled Japanese woodblock print. Artist signature and seal present. Lower left publisher/date seal (Wanatabe Shozaburo) indicating a lifetime-era impression. Traditional Japanese washi paper. Rich tonal gradation and detailed printing throughout. Print exhibits age-related toning and minor waviness consistent with vintage Japanese paper artworks. Backing and mounting appear older. Please review photographs carefully for complete condition details. “Daimotsu, Amagasaki” is one of Hasui’s dramatic industrial waterside scenes and is particularly admired for its moody nighttime atmosphere and reflective water effects. Original lifetime impressions are highly collectible and increasingly difficult to acquire. A superb addition for collectors of Japanese woodblock prints, shin-hanga, Asian art, and museum-quality landscape works. Signature may be required.
